What will you do

Based on your affinity for and expertise in immunology and oncology, you will be involved in scientific research within the research line of tumor immunology and lymphomas. The other four main research lines of the department concern solid tumors, translational models of tissue damage and regeneration, molecular endotypes in chronic diseases, and immune-mediated diseases.

The research in the department has a strong translational character and aims at identifying biological mechanisms that contribute to disease and regaining health. The department operates at the interface between clinic (diagnostics and treatment) and biology, with excellent cross-pollination within the department, the cluster, the UMCG as well as regionally and (inter)nationally. Within this dynamic environment, you will contribute to education and training as a teacher, and you will also participate in management tasks.

The department

The Department of Pathology and Medical Biology of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) consists of approximately 250 employees, who work together on the basis of equality and solidarity both within the UMCG and in the region. We strive to provide top-of-the-line patient care, conduct innovative translational and applied scientific research, provide state-of-the-art education as well as demonstrate clinical and scientific leadership.

The department is (inter)national leader in the field of molecular diagnostics, digital pathology, immunology and scientific research and has high-quality infrastructure and facilities. The department also actively participates in the highly valued educational curricula for medicine, dentistry and biomedical sciences and offers internships for various HBO / MBO courses.

The team
You will work within the staff of the Department of Pathology and Medical Biology. The staff currently consists of 40 colleagues, including 19 pathologists, 6 clinical molecular biologists and 15 staff members working in research and education. Within the research line tumor immunology and lymphomas there are 4 staff members, namely an immunologist, two molecular biologists and a pathologist.

This is a varied team with a lot of knowledge and expertise and extensive collaborations with, among others, the departments of Hematology, Medical Oncology, Genetics and several (inter)national research groups. The team focuses on fundamental and translational research with great enthusiasm, commitment and dedication.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a creative colleague with extensive wet-lab experience and comprehensive knowledge in the field of immunology and molecular oncology. You have at least 4 years of postgraduate experience and a demonstrable affinity with supervising (PhD) students. As a team player in an open, collegial and inspiring research and learning environment, you will initially contribute to ongoing projects.

Within the framework of the main line of research and at the level of Assistant Professor, you will be encouraged and supported to develop and grow your own independent research line over time. In your academic role, you connect people and ideas and make an active contribution to the further strengthening of the research line, the department and collaborations within and outside the UMCG. In addition, you are passionate about sharing knowledge and skills and motivated to further develop as a supervisor and teacher. In that context, you have the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or are willing to obtain it in the short term.

What do we offer

The Department of Pathology and Medical Biology is experienced as a pleasant working environment with ample opportunities for collaboration and personal development. Based on your expertise and ambition, you will be given every opportunity to further shape your career. The UMCG offers an attractive working environment between inspired and committed scientists and a good package of primary and secondary employment conditions.
