We're hiring a full-time postdoc researcher to develop AI-driven methods for monitoring and improving biofabrication of cartilage-regenerating materials, combining biofabrication and AI for functional tissue engineering.

Dit ga je doen

This is a full-time post-doctoral position (1.0 FTE), initially for 1.5 years, and will be embedded within the UMC Utrecht AI-Lab initiative. Your primary focus will be the development of AI models for defect detection and process optimization of tissue constructs (based on biomaterials and living cells), including their efficient deployment on embedded hardware, as well as the design and management of the supporting data pipeline.

You will be part of the Biofabrication for Translational Regenerative Medicine group, located at the Regenerative Medicine Center in Utrecht. In this role, you will work closely with the Innovation Center for Advanced Therapies (ICAT) and Biomotion, an innovative biofabrication company, and coordinate your research within a network of collaborators across the Utrecht AI-Lab initiative. You will work in an ambitious, motivated, and multidisciplinary team of clinicians, veterinarians, physicists, chemists, biologists, and engineers, combining expertise to advance the development of regenerative medicine solutions.

Hier ga je werken

This position is hosted at the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht (RMCU), with your appointment in the Department of Orthopedics at UMC Utrecht. Located at the Utrecht Science Park, the RMCU brings together the largest concentration of regenerative medicine researchers in the Netherlands. The group is internationally recognized as a leader in the development of innovative biofabrication-based regenerative therapies and advanced in vitro models.

Within this dynamic environment, scientists, engineers, clinicians, students, ethicists, and support staff work closely together to translate scientific and technological breakthroughs into tangible benefits for patients.

Dit neem je mee

  • You hold a PhD degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a strong background in machine learning, computer vision, or data-driven modeling.
  • You have extensive experience in the development and implementation of AI and machine learning algorithms, ideally with applications involving image analysis, real-time monitoring, or complex process optimization.
  • You have hands-on experience with model optimization techniques such as post-training quantization (PTQ), quantization-aware training (QAT), pruning, and knowledge distillation.
  • You are familiar with deploying models using ONNX Runtime and/or NVIDIA TensorRT, and can measure and tune performance on embedded devices. You have built data pipelines, including annotation workflows, labeling QA, and active learning loops.
  • You are motivated by the opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware, software, and biology, applying computational approaches to address challenging problems in biofabrication and regenerative medicine.
  • You are curious, driven, and goal-oriented, with a strong desire to learn and innovate. You thrive in a multidisciplinary research environment and are able to tackle challenges effectively, using creativity to develop novel solutions. While you can work independently, you also excel in a collaborative team setting and are skilled at building strong connections with consortium partners.
  • You communicate scientific ideas and results clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Dit bieden we jou

  • A salary between € 4818,- and € 6594,- gross per month (salary scale 11), based on full-time employment.
  • Year-end bonus of 8.3% and holiday allowance of 8%.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 70% of the monthly contribution.
  • 100% public transport reimbursement. Are you coming on foot, by bike or by car? You will then receive a reimbursement of € 0.18 per km (by car up to a max. of 40 km one way).
  • Possibilities to develop yourself personally and professionally.
  • The option to select additional employment benefits in exchange for gross salary, such as purchasing a bicycle and memberships.
